Determining the right ITG practices for an organization remains a complex endeavor in both developed as well as developing economies. Universities have many unique characteristics that the well studied ITG experiences of the financial and health industry can’t be directly applied to them. In Ethiopia no prior studies were conducted on ITG practices of universities and it is limited for other sectors as well. Hence, using survey data, this study will employ the explanatory method to assess IT governance practices in Ethiopian HEIs and its effect on the success of the universities incorporating IT auditing as a moderating variable. Twelve public universities (three from four generations of universities) will be included in the study and believed to be representative as the universities are homogeneous. The findings will have significant contributions for academic, practice and research. Keyphrases: HEIs, IT Governance, IT audit, organizational success
