Assessment of thermal comfort and indoor air quality parameters in studio and classroom environment

Abstract

This study investigates the effects of thermal comfort and indoor air quality (IAQ) on student’s performance regarding different ventilation modes. For this purpose, experimental and subjective measurements are conducted in both studio and classroom environment, in Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department at Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey. A total of 120 third year undergraduate interior architecture students participated to the measurements in both winter and summer season. Carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations, indoor air temperature, mean radiant temperature and humidity values are collected as the thermal comfort and Indoor air quality parameters under the three different considered ventilation modes: 1) without opening door and windows mode setting; (2) natural ventilation mode and (3) the mechanical school-air unit mode. In these three different modes in both seasons, student performances were determined based on their success on concentration and attention tests results. The statistical data was calculated using IBM SPSS 21 software. According to the results of both experimental and subjective measurements,

there is a significantly difference between the seasons. In winter season, the mechanical school-air unit mode had the highest level of satisfaction in both teaching environments. On the other hand, in summer season the lowest CO2 concentration levels were obtained in both natural and mechanical ventilation mode regardless teaching environments. In terms of success, the mechanical school-air unit mode was the most satisfactory ventilation setting in both studio and classroom environment, where the highest grade of students’ concentration and attention were obtained.
